Amazon Replaces Fire Tablets With Android Alexa Tablets Starting at $229.99

Amazon is replacing its Fire tablets with three Alexa Tablets that run Android with full access to the Google Play Store. The Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro are priced from $229.99 to $549.99 and go on sale on October 14, 2026, in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

Earlier Amazon tablets ran Fire OS and shipped with Amazon’s own app store, so apps such as YouTube, Netflix, and Gmail required sideloading workarounds. The new models install those apps straight from Google Play at launch. An Amazon spokesperson described the devices as “an all-new product line with new hardware and a new OS, rather than a rebrand of Fire Tablets.”

Amazon says it plans to keep supporting existing Fire tablets, but production of new Fire units has ended.

Alexa Tablet 8, 11, and 12 Pro Prices and Specifications

  • Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: 12-inch 280 PPI display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 3:2 aspect ratio, 6.5 mm aluminum unibody, Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, and 16 hours of video playback. It starts at $499.99, or $549.99 with the anti-glare Nanomatte display developed with Corning, in Graphite.
  • Alexa Tablet 11: 2.5K display at 276 pixels per inch with 90Hz scrolling and a 16:10 aspect ratio, dual Dolby Atmos speakers, and 15 hours of video playback. It starts at $329.99 in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha.
  • Alexa Tablet 8: 8.7-inch display in an all-aluminum body weighing 329 grams. It starts at $229.99 in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.

Amazon claims the 12 Pro delivers nearly three times the processing performance and nine times the graphics performance of any tablet the company has shipped before. An Alexa Tablet Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard are sold as accessories for the 12 Pro.

Alexa+ is built into all three models. Users can say “Alexa” or tap an Ask Alexa button, and On-Screen Intelligence lets the assistant analyze what is currently displayed on screen — Amazon’s example being asking which hikes in a list of trails best suit the user. Opening the Kindle app silences notifications, reduces blue light, and extends battery life to up to 20 hours.

What Fire Tablet Buyers Should Consider

Anyone choosing between a remaining Fire tablet and the new lineup should weigh three points from Amazon’s announcement:

  • Fire tablets stay supported, but no new Fire units are being produced.
  • Alexa Tablets install apps from Google Play without sideloading.
  • Alexa+ and On-Screen Intelligence ship on the Alexa Tablets at launch.

Amazon also announced Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, bundled with a protective case and a year of Amazon Kids+. Both lineups launch in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19, and the Kids Tablets also reach Japan on October 14. Amazon has not announced release dates for other markets.
